Meter Pay is the built-in payment system for Meter. It lets drivers collect card payments, send payment links, and receive payouts β all from within the app.
Payment Links
Send a payment link to your rider after a trip. The rider can pay from their phone using any saved card or by entering a new one. No extra hardware needed.
Authorizations for Bookings and Cancellation Fees
When a rider books a trip, Meter Pay pre-authorizes their card to hold the estimated fare. If the rider cancels, only the cancellation fee is captured and the rest is released back to the rider's card. If the trip is completed, the full fare is captured at the end of the ride.
If the prepaid payment capture fails when the driver completes the trip, both the driver and rider are notified. The driver receives a push notification and email advising them to collect payment using a payment link or terminal. The rider receives an SMS or push notification letting them know there was a payment issue and they may be asked to pay again.
Tap to Pay (Terminal Payments)
Accept in-person card payments using Tap to Pay on your phone. After a trip, select the Tap to Pay option and have the rider tap their card or phone to pay directly.
Requirements for Tap to Pay
Meter Pro or Fleet subscription (including free trials)
Meter Pay account connected β this is set up automatically when you complete the digital payments onboarding in the app
Supported device β your phone must support NFC contactless payments
How to Set Up Tap to Pay
Open the Meter app and go to Settings.
Navigate to Digital Payments and complete the onboarding process.
Once your Meter Pay account is connected, the Tap to Pay option will appear automatically after you complete a trip.
Troubleshooting
If you don't see the Tap to Pay option:
Make sure your subscription is active. Go to Settings > Subscription and check your status.
Try Restore Purchases (Settings > Meter Pro > Learn More > Restore Purchases).
Update the app to the latest version.
Restart the app or your phone.
Contact support if the issue persists.
Driver Payouts (Meter Fleet)
Fleet drivers receive their earnings automatically through Meter Pay. After a trip is completed, the driver's share is deposited into their Meter Pay account and paid out to their bank on their chosen schedule (daily, weekly, or monthly). Fleet managers can configure revenue sharing percentages from the Fleet Console.
Payment Reconciliation
If there is an issue with your Meter Pay account, such as needing more setup or verification, your payout may be placed in a pending state instead of failing.
Once the account issue is fixed, Meter automatically reconciles the payout and sends it to your Meter Pay account.
This also applies when a rider pays for a booking before a fleet owner finishes Meter Pay setup.
